The 14th edition of the FINA Men’s Water Polo Junior World Championships started on August 18 and finishes on August 26 in the spectacular scenario of Long Beach (Calif., USA), with the participation of 24 countries divided in four groups.

Match Report:
The statistics tell the tale with Greece’s defence the major contributor to the victory. As the 2001 champion country, Greece has the pedigree and showed it will push for top spot in a very hard group. Counter-attack was also a key area in which Greece exploited Japan’s inexperience.

Match Report:
This was a stirring encounter in the early stages with Greece only hitting the lead in the final minute of the first quarter. New Zealand equalised in the second and went two down, finally finishing the half one down. It looked good for the third period but Greece stepped up a gear, frustrated Kiwi coach Goldsworthy gained a second yellow card in two days and Greece pulled away for a five-goal margin at the break. Three of those came in the last 90 seconds. The domination continued in the final period. Looking at the statistics, Greece hammered the New Zealand goal and Parr was up to the task with a fantastic 16 saves, including three penalty stops.

Match Report:
It was a frustrating result for Australia and a wonderful comeback for Greece that resulted in the two squads ending in a 7-7 tie. After the first quarter of play Australia appeared to be in control leading 3-0. Undaunted, the Greeks would rally in the second frame to pull within 5-3 at the end of the first half. In the third quarter the Australian offence stalled while Greece was able to inch closer at 5-4 headed into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Greece tied the score just seconds into the frame to even things up at five. Australia would then surge ahead with consecutive goals to lead 7-5 with 4:43 remaining in the game. Greece would not be denied coming back with two scores, the last of which hit the net with just 18 seconds remaining on a man-up advantage. Australia had one last chance to win the game but a final shot was denied by the Greek goaltender.

Match Report: Serbia managed to break the deadlock in Group C with what appeared to be a crushing victory against Greece. However, the two champions of the new century were head to head for the better part of the first half before Serbia gained a two-goal margin with 14 seconds left on the clock. The teams couldn’t be separated in the third period. In the fourth, Basic scored twice in the first two minutes and Serbia was four ahead. Beristianos missed a penalty and this gave Serbia the impetus to score twice more with Basic gaining a third and a six-goal margin. Kolomvos scored a great centre-forward backhand but Vapinski closed the game with a backhand of his own, giving his team top spot in the group with just the game against New Zealand to confirm this.

Match Report:
Greece had no problems rolling Iran. The victory puts Greece at 3-1-1 in Group C play while Iran finished winless at 0-5. This one was no doubt from the start as Greece jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first. In the second it kept throttling the Iranians and built a 10-1 halftime lead. The third quarter proved to be the same story as Greece opened up a 16-2 lead at the end of three. In the fourth, Iran added two more scores but it was all for nought as Greece had long ago secured this victory. Beristianos of Greece and Golshani of Iran were tossed from the game via three exclusions apiece. Greece finished third and Iran last after the rounds.

Match Report:
In easily one of the best games thus far in championships, Croatia outlasted Greece 9-7 in overtime to advance from the round of 16. A hotly contested battle in front of a jam-packed crowd at Long Beach State witnessed a close game throughout. Greece held the early advantage leading 2-1 after the first. In the second period Croatia roared back to claim a 4-3 lead before the intermission. The second half is where things really got exciting as the teams were tied at four and then again at five goals apiece with play moving to the fourth quarter. In the fourth, it was Greece who answered first ripping the net with 5:52 to go in the period to take a 6-5 lead. Undaunted, Croatia came back minutes later to tie the score at 6-6. Just some 15 seconds after the Croatian goal, Greece tossed one in from outside to grab a 7-6 lead.
However, Greece could not hold the lead as, following an exclusion, Croatia took full advantage of the extra man tying the game at seven with 2:45 to go. Greece would get other opportunities but offensive fouls would prove to be a thorn in its side on this day. A Greek missed shot and rebound recovery with just 13 ticks on the clock was negated by an offensive foul, leaving Croatia with a chance to win in regulation. Luckily for Greece, its attempt failed. In overtime, things got chippy as the physical play was cranked up a notch. Croatia used another Greek exclusion to grab the lead at 8-7 for the only goal of the first overtime period. In the second it pulled the same move again using the man-up situation to its advantage and with it built a 9-7 lead. Mourikis of Greece was given the gate after a game misconduct foul for some extracurricular activities in transition. Following that there just was not enough time left for Greece to rally and it fell 9-7. Along with Mourikis, Batakis, and Beristianos were shown the proverbial door after three exclusions each, and likewise for Radmanovic and Buljubasic of Croatia. Croatia now moves on to tangle with Spain, which has yet to falter through six games of the championships. Greece will play Argentina in a quest to finish ninth.

Σύνοψη Αγώνα:
Το αντιπροσωπευτικό συγκρότημα προσπάθησε, δεν κατάφερε όμως να νικήσει την Κροατία στους "16" του Παγκοσμίου πρωταθλήματος στο Λονγκ Μπιτς.Οι παίκτες του Παναγιώτη Τρούλου ηττήθηκαν στην παράταση με 9-7 από τους Κροάτες και πλέον θα συμμετάσχουν σε παιχνίδια κατάταξης για τις θέσεις 9-16, με πρώτο αντίπαλο την Αργεντινή. Το τέταρτο οκτάλεπτο ήταν συναρπαστικό με τους διεθνείς να προηγούνται δύο φορές, όμως οι Κροάτες ισοφάρισαν το ματς. Ο Μοιράλης έβαλε την Εθνική μπροστά με 7-6, πριν ισοφαρίσει ο Σούταλο στην εκπνοή. Σην παράταση, οι Κροάτες με "καθαρό" μυαλό πήραν τη νίκη-πρόκριση.

Match Report:
Greece was able to bounce back following a devastating overtime loss to Croatia on Thursday evening by downing Argentina 16-4 this afternoon. In this contest Argentina gave Greece some problems in the first quarter. Argentina took a lead 2-1 on an Echenique goal with 5:22 to go in the period. A few moments later Greece came back to tie the game and then took a 3-2 lead with a few minutes to spare in the first period. In the second stanza Greece piled it on scoring six unanswered goals. To add to Argentina's problems, Carabantes gained his third exclusion. At the half it was a comfortable 9-2 lead for Greece. In the second half it basically eased its way to victory, taking a 13-3 lead after the third quarter and finishing off the game 16-4.

Match Report:
Greece, as expected, glided into the play-off for ninth. Having come from the super group in which semifinalist Serbia and beaten quarterfinalist Australia progressed, Greece is odds on to win tomorrow’s match. Today it toyed with Japan in the first half and accelerated away in the second. The barrage of shots Greece fired into the goalmouth and the aggressive play overpowered Japan. Greece commanded centre forward and Kolomvos in the fourth typified how to play the two-metre position. Eyebrows were raised in the opening quarter when Japan led and then held Greece to a draw but Greece pulled away.

Match Report:
Greece slipped to ninth from sixth in the world rankings and a far cry from victory in 2001 in Istanbul, Turkey. It almost lost the game when after 4-0 up at quarter time, it managed to stave off the French attack 9-8. It was Miralis who went wild with three goals in the opening period. He gained his second penalty in the second and collected a third penalty goal in the fourth. The margin was trimmed to two in the second and maintained in the third. As the game heated, Greek coach Troulos gained a yellow card. He lost two of his players to major fouls, as did France’s Britto. Mourikis scored on extra in the fourth for 8-5 and Greece looked safe but Marzouki and Bodegas, back from injury, scored to narrow the margin to one. Fountoulis gave up a penalty foul and Bodegas grabbed his third to equalise at 3:13. Greece gained an extra man and went to a timeout. The result was gaining a penalty shot 18 seconds into possession time. Tsakirakis converted at 1:06 and it proved the winner. France was 10th in Mar del Plata two years ago so maintained its ranking.
