Shturm wins Russian Cup competiton in extra-time

Aleksandar Sapic scored four goals in his first final game for Shturm 2002.

Russia's national champion Shturm 2002 Chechov has also won the national cup competition, which was held in Chechov this week. In the final game head coach Aleksandar Kabanov´s players beat “Lukoil” Spartak Volgograd 12-11 (3-2, 1-2, 3-4, 4-3/1-1, 1-0) in extra-time. The club from the Moscow region is succeeding LEN Trophy finalist Sintez Kazan; the 2005 winner was knocked out by Lukoil-Spartak in the semi-finals the day before in a penalty shot-out.

The final game proved as a real nailbiter again; here the result was 10-10 after regulation. In extra-time Jury Zheltovsky scored first for Shturm, but Spartak´s Roman Balachov still levelled the score in the first half. But the tireless Zheltovsky scored again for the team from the Moscow region, bringing the score to the final result of 12-11. The most successful scorer was Chechov´s most spectacular transfer: Serbian international Aleksandar Sapic, top scorer of the European Championships in Belgrade two weeks ago, also netted four balls for his new club team.
