Adriatic League to start in Autumn?

The Adriatic League, something that was talked about for the last 2-3 years, is to start this autumn with club teams from Montenegro and Croatia, as national media reported. On the occasion of the recent European Championships Qualification in Dubrovnik, Croatia the two national federations made an agreement of starting a new league in order to keep the level of the games and the team performances high.

The league is to start with 12 teams: Montenegro will provide Jadran Herceg Novi, Primorac Kotor, PVK “Budvaanska Rivijera” Budva and a forth team that will be decided at the end of national Championships. Croatia is to send EuroLeague finalist Jug “Croatia Osiguranje” Dubrovnik, Mladost Zagreb, VK Medvescak, Primorje Rijeka, VK Sibenik, and three teams from Split: VK Jadran, VK Mornar “Brodospas” and the former Champions League winner POSK “Splitska Banka”.

The general secretary of Montenegro Waterpolo Federation, Dejan Adzic, said that on all of the major issues an agreement was reached and that both federations are looking forward to the new competition. They are under impression that the league will bring many very close games and will help the sport in many ways. They know that every country in the region has two or three good teams and the rest would like to become better and in order to make a progress with quality, this would be a great start.

Serbian teams are interested in participating as well, however, for some reasons they will not be involved in this competition yet. The Hungarian federation showed some interest as well, however, they did not decide yet how to participate. Nevertheless it is hoped the two powerhouse of waterpolo are becoming part of the competition soon. One of the major questions is sponsorship and both sides are hoping for the best and if needed, federations will come to help out initially.

First presentations for this competition were already made on the occasion of the 2003 European Championships in Kranj, Slovenia. In the meantime the Slovenian federation has launched the Alpe Adria League which started last season with six teams from Slovenia, Austria and Italy. This year`s second edition of this competition was now expanded to nine teams from five nations
